IDL124 Season 3: Building Intergenerational Relationships with Nate Chatfield

Where do modern athletes and their coaches most often clash? What is the essential connection between results and relationships? How can you strengthen and nurture the relationships in your business with the Enneagram as a tool?

Today’s guest is Nate Chatfield, a soccer coach at Lipscomb University. Our focus today is on the emerging generation of workers, who are today’s current athletes and college students. Together, we look at the reality that they face, focussing particularly on social media, as well as how leaders can build relationships and engage with this next generation.

Meet Nate Chatfield

Nate has been in coaching for 15 years and is currently an NCAA I soccer coach at Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN.

In addition to soccer, Nate is a licensed Leadership Coach with the John Maxwell team where he specializes in creating team environments that are both relationally deep and professionally excellent.

Nate and his wife, Tiffany, reside in Nashville along with their four daughters.

Where modern athletes and their coaches clash

This is one of the first generations that is really coming through with extreme levels of social media engagement. And for me, we are seeing levels of anxiety with modern athletes that I just have not seen before [because] I think we are seeing a real struggle with the modern coach trying to connect to the modern athlete.

Many young athletes, from their schooling years right up until college and beyond, often have coaches that drill them to not make mistakes.

I hear the communication from some of these coaches, and I sit and think to myself, “It is no wonder these [young athletes] have anxiety when they’re spoken to this way.

They place a fear of making mistakes into all these aspiring athletes, which completely stunts their growth, the development of their skills, and their confidence levels.

They become far more occupied with not making mistakes than they actually focus on playing well.

The connection between results and relationships

There’s this amazing dynamic tension that we can find between results and relationships and those two should not be at odds. I think you can have a deep, relational connection with your players … but also demand that competitive excellence side … when you’re able to do both, that’s when you find something truly special.

A success rate is heightened and often more guaranteed when there is a solid connection between the relationships between coaches and players and the results that they can produce.

That connection is centered on trust. When players trust their coaches, and when coaches can trust their players, then the results are golden.

When a coach can make decisions and the players trust them, they are likely to follow through on those decisions even if they are unsure. That trust carries them through because they know that their coach truly cares for them.

Enneagram in business

I came across the enneagram five years ago … I’d never heard of this thing before, I was like, “Okay, what’s this voodoo, what is going on here” … [but] the more I’ve studied it, the more it has really helped to transform my relationships, the way I see myself, [and] the way I interact with others.

The Enneagram is not a type of be-all-end-all mechanism that puts people in boxes and labels them. Instead, it’s a tool for communication.

It is a method that you can use to make better sense of why someone acts the way that they do, and how you can respond to them in a way that they can truly hear you and understand you.

What I love about the enneagram is [that] it speaks directly to why we think, feel, and act the way that we do.

Two people can hear the same thing in two different ways, and the enneagram understands that.

It helps you to be more intentional and authentic in expressing yourself in a way that those people can truly understand you because you can be intentional with how you choose to interact with people based on their personality styles.

Using tools like the Enneagram, they’re essential for you to find a way to interact [and] to understand.
